A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Organ and tissue donation is often called the greatest gift of all. Ask any of the thousands of Australians who have received a life-saving transplant and they would all agree.
Hospitals in NSW have been at the forefront of transplantation for over 40 years. From the pioneering work of liver and kidney transplants at the Prince of Wales, Royal Prince Alfred and Westmead Hospitals in the 1960s to the first successful heart transplant at St Vincent’s Hospital in the 1980s, the state of NSW can be proud of its record in saving lives.
And now it is the turn of NSW to celebrate organ and tissue donation as the host of the 13th Australian Transplant Games.
The Games unite all those touched by organ and tissue donation and transplantation including transplant recipients, donor families, living donors and those waiting for a transplant, as well as the family and friends who have supported those going through the process. Through sport and games, competitors say thank you to organ and tissue donors through their renewed state of health and wellbeing.
Many transplant recipients have not been able to participate in any sporting activity for many years. This is an opportunity to once again get involved in sport at whatever level they are able to achieve. Ability is not a factor. The joy of a competitor being able just to compete is what is most inspiring. Often it is the competitor coming last who gets the greatest cheer.
But it’s not just a sporting event – it’s Australia’s largest awareness event for organ and tissue donation and demonstrates ‘what a life difference’ transplantation makes. Importantly the Games encourage families to have that important conversation and ‘know each other’s wishes’.
We have a long and proud record of helping to improve donation rates and awareness of donation through these Games and look forward to a successful and inspiring Games in Newcastle in 2012.
