TRANSPLANT GAMES ROCKS RAIDERS
Promotion of the 12th Australian Transplant Games in Canberra in October got underway early in August with a special DonateLife promotion at the Canberra Raiders vs Penrith Rugby League match. Transplant Australia ACT President Steve Williams was interviewed on the ground at half time promoting the games and what they would mean to Canberra. Steve’s wife, Jude and boys, Matthew and Jack joined him. Steve has received two double lung transplants. The ‘To donate life, discuss it today, Ok?’ advertisement was played shortly before his address to a crowd of 8,550. Transplant Australia volunteers gave out postcards featuring Cordelia, a young Canberra girl who has received a liver transplant. Transplant Australia will be co-ordinating a number of promotional activities in the leadup to the Games, October 2-10. -
DONATELIFE THANK YOU GARDEN
Who will you thank?
Many people make transplantation possible. Without donors, lives would not be saved. However there are many others who also contribute to the greatest gift of all.
Transplant Australia is pleased to announce the establishment of the DonateLife Thank You Garden as part of our Charity Partnership with Floriade, Australia’s premier spring festival.
You are invited to dedicate a small thank you sign to whomever you choose. It may be the donor or their family who generously donated their organs, it might be your surgeon, physician or nurse. Equally you might like to thank your family or a friend who cared for you in your recovery, or someone else close to your heart.
We are asking for as many recipients as possible to take the time to be involved in this valuable project and help make the most of life at the transplant games.
The DonateLife Thank You Garden, sponsored by the Organ and Tissue Authority, will be on display from the commencement of Floriade on September 11 right through to October 10 and will be officially unveiled on Monday, September 13.
The Garden consists of a flower bed in the shape of a flower and orange and magenta tulips. It will be located at one of the most popular thoroughfares at Floriade.
Recipients can participate in this project by filling in the following form Thank you garden message with your message (space is restricted to 150 characters) naming who you would like to thank and why. All messages will then be printed on individual garden bed signs and planted in the flower bed for the duration of Floriade.

Big Ol Bus Band confirmed for opening ceremony
The Big Ol Bus Band is on a musical odyssey that will see them make their way to the far corners of Australia. With their double bass on the roof and four horns in the back seat, the ten musicians and two dancers make for a great musical ride with their highly infectious performance of swing, new orleans... and dash of burlesque!
Band leader Hughie has worn out numerous pairs of boots on the backroads between Broken Hill, Sydney, and Nashville – where the Big Ol Bus Band first struck up and rolled.
Back in Australia, he has put together a band of the country's finest players carrying their own credentials, including credits with Keith Urban, INXS, Lou Rawls, Smokey Robinson, Human Nature, Jimmy Barnes, James Morrison and more.
