Donor Activities
The Transplant Games are forever growing with an increase of Australians touched by donation. Donor families and living donors are no exception.
This year the Games will welcome the largest attendance of donor families and living donors yet. Organisers have developed a great schedule of donor activities with more events and sports than ever before. This is what’s confirmed so far (and more is in the pipeline).
March at the Opening Parade and Ceremony
Every Games donor family members and living donors march into the opening ceremony in a tribute their loved ones and celebrate their decision to donate. The traditional march commences before the opening ceremony and joins the procession of each state team. A special banner and shirt will be provided to all registered living donors and donor families.
More Sports
Donors and Donor Family members will be eligible to compete in more sports and games which include; mini marathon, chess, swimming events, cycling, golf, backgammon, track and field, petanque, ten pin bowling and tennis. Organisers are still finalising details. We want all ‘supporters’ to have a full experience.
Australian Donor Family Quilt and Quilt Display
Quilts have a long standing tradition with organ donors in the Australian Capital Territory and across countries like the United States and United Kingdom.
Transplant Australia will display the Australian Donor Family Quilt at the Transplant Games. The Quilt will display patches made by donor families in memory of their loved ones. You can get involved with this project by contacting Julie Edwards at the National Office who will direct you to one of our donor family Quilt Coordinators.
We are in discussions with DonateLife ACT to display some of the quilts made for donor families in the ACT region. The ACT donor agency has been given quilts for years donated by local quilting associations. The donor coordinators place the quilt over the body of deceased organ donors. The quilts are given to family members as a tangible gift from the agency to remember their loved one. Many families are touched by the quilts and are forever grateful.
Other events and activities being confirmed will involve Floriade and the Opening Ceremony plus sports and activities.
