Floriade & Cultural Activities

Floriade

Transplant Australia is pleased to announce that it has been selected as one of two Official Charities of Floriade, Australia's premier spring festival.

Floriade 2010 features more than one million blooms as a backdrop for fantastic entertainment, displays and a whole program celebrating the theme of imagination and runs from Saturday 11 September - Sunday 10 October, 2010.

Floriade began in 1988 as a spectacular commemoration of Australia's Bicentenary and Canberra's 75th birthday. Floriade blossomed for the first time with a stunning floral display of exotic bulbs and annuals, which grow beautifully in Canberra's climate.

The community embraced the inaugural Floriade, making it such a success that it became an annual event - Australia's celebration of spring. Since its beginnings in 1988 Floriade has been held in the city, in Canberra's Commonwealth Park.

Floriade is Australia's premier spring festival and a world-class floral spectacular. More than one million blooms create a stunning backdrop to a month-long festival filled with music, cultural celebrations, horticultural workshops, artistic displays, entertainment and recreational activities. Floriade runs from mid-September to mid-October and attracts more than 400,000 attendees.

Here's a few of the highlights of the Games at Floriade this year:.

GAMES OPENING CEREMONY AND DONATELIFE CONCERT

Transplant Australia is pleased to announce that 2008 Australian Idol Winner, Wes Carr, will be headlining the Games Opening Concert on Sunday October 3 at Floriade in Canberra.

Born and raised in Adelaide, Wes Carr first began to teach himself guitar and piano at the age of 12. Wes moved to Sydney at 15 and over the years has worked hard to win scholarships, peer-approval, acclaim and competitions. In 2008 Wes won Idol and released his debut post-Idol single You which hit the #1 spot on the Australian charts and reached platinum sales. With his approachable demeanour, his love of music and his sheer talent, audiences are guaranteed to enjoy this talented artist’s performance in the beautiful surroundings of Floriade.

The Big Ol Bus Band will also be playing at the concert. The band is the fresh sound of swingin' roots music in Australia. Twelve singers, dancers and musicians jump on board the ol' 55 seater bus and hit the highway. Their sold out Sydney theatre shows has word fast spreading that this band is destined to play the biggest festivals around the world so we are really pleased to have them on board for the Games opening concert.

TABLE TENNIS, PETANQUE AND CHESS AT FLORIADE

On September 19, 2010 there will be an opportunity to trial some of the Games’ activities at Floriade. Join in, compete against the public and show Canberra what the Transplant Games are all about while raising awareness for organ and tissue donation. Please ring the National Office on 1800 827 757 if you are interested in getting involved.

DONATELIFE THANK YOU GARDEN

Many people make transplantation possible. Without donors, lives would not be saved. However there are many others who also contribute to the greatest gift of all.

Transplant Australia is pleased to announce the establishment of the DonateLife Thank You Garden as part of our Charity Partnership with Floriade, Australia’s premier spring festival.

You are invited to dedicate a small thank you sign to whomever you choose. It may be the donor or their family who generously donated their organs, it might be your surgeon, physician or nurse. Equally you might like to thank your family or a friend who cared for you in your recovery, or someone else close to your heart.

We are asking for as many recipients as possible to take the time to be involved in this valuable project and help make the most of life at the transplant games.

The DonateLife Thank You Garden, sponsored by the Organ and Tissue Authority, will be on display from the commencement of Floriade on September 11 right through to October 10 and will be officially unveiled on Monday, September 13.

The Garden consists of a flower bed in the shape of a flower and orange and magenta tulips. It will be located at one of the most popular thoroughfares at Floriade.

Recipients can participate in this project by filling in the following form  Thank you garden message with your message (space is restricted to 150 characters) naming who you would like to thank and why. All messages will then be printed on individual garden bed signs and planted in the flower bed for the duration of Floriade.

BUTTERFLY KITE PAINTING
