About the Games

The Australian Transplant Games are a wonderful celebration of life and provide 'living proof' that organ and tissue donation works and allows recipients to return to a productive and fulfilling life.

The Games are held every two years.

They promote physical activity and improved health among participants, showing the quality of life one can experience. They provide an opportunity to network with others in similar situations - transplant recipients, those undergoing dialysis treatment, those awaiting transplantation, living donors, family members of deceased donors and supporters.

Importantly they promote awareness of organ donation and have resulted in an increased organ donation rate in each year the Games is held.

The 11th Games will be conducted from October 4 -11, 2008 and will consist of sporting and recreational activities. They will be held in Perth and hosted by the The City of Belmont.

Who can take part;

  • Athletes (Recipients, Dialysis, Cystic Fibrosis)
  • Donor Families
  • Living Donors
  • Supporters

Athletes need to be a member of Transplant Australia.

Athletes are expected from every State in Australia. A large number of competitors from overseas will also attend the Games.

In addition to medals awarded in each sporting and recreational event, there is also the Victor Chang Memorial Shield, the Donor Family Shield, the Cup for the Athlete of the Games, the Clifford C Henderson Shields (1 male and 1 female), the Jack Nolan Encouragement Award, the Lorraine McLeod Womens Tennis award and the Junior Shield. These awards are presented to individuals who embody the spirit of the Games or individual States achieving the most medal points in each category.

A range of activities are offered from Chess and Backgammon to high level sports including Tennis, Squash, Athletics and Swimming.
